AŠ - PROJECT AŠANÉ
What is the present form and function of city center? May be a historical trauma for the city an advantage and not a burden? How to deal with geothermal energy or how to utilize border with Germany? These questions are asked by students of architecture at TU Liberec so they answers with four urban studies for Aš city. The students of graphic design at University of Fine Arts in Brno give the project a visual face.

BRNO – HOUSES IN POWER
Architect Bára Šimonová will tell stories about buildings around Kounicova street in literature, history and film. Architecture that waits for our appreciation: houses full of contradictions, houses of yesterday and today, houses misused by power. The walk will uncover qualities of the houses.

COFFEEHOUSES IN BRNO
Coffeehouse culture has a long tradition in Brno. It goes through a real renaissance today. Small cafés with great charisma, numerous self-made interiors with low budgets, delicious coffee and home-made delicacies. Exciting places where people like to meet each other. The young Brno cafés will be shown by editors of the ERA21 magazine Osamu Okamura and Zuzana Morávková.

ČERNOŠICE – ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE EYES OF CHILDREN

Discussion about future existence of the department store Uran/Banco will include representatives of the city, the investor, the experts and the public. The department store was designed by architect Emil Přikryl in the 1980s. The building has got into a clash of interests today and is in danger of demolition. The discussion will reveal possibilities of how to treat buildings of that time and how to find new uses for them.

DUBÁ – LOBEČ – MŠENO: INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS IN KOKOŘÍNSKO
Bike ride showing more than the technical buildings in Kokořínsko (Kokořín valley) is accompanied by professional explanation (oasthouse in Dubá, brewery in Lobeč, malt house in Mšeno and other interesting places, such as car camping site in Dubá and elementary school in Mšeno). In case of bad weather, other kind of transport is provided.

HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ – A GENERATION OF HRADEC ARCHITECTS
Architecture historian Ladislav Zikmund-Lender guides us through the city centre and shows us both its jewels and its lesser known buidings. Museum by Jan Kotěra, Okresní dům (District House), Pražský most (Prague Bridge), Palmová zahrada (Palm Garden), municipal houses and houses for the bourgeoisie. Architects Ondřej Lipenský and Marek Pencák present the architecture of Kukleny and Pražské předměstí (Prague Suburb). Rich industrial past, modest but very valuable buildings, factories from the First Czechoslovak Republic, gentle touches of cubism and functionalism. LIBEREC – PRAG OPEN 2013
Pražská street is the main Liberec promenade. It had been the residence of the rich bourgeoisie. After the large department stores had been built in the city, this street has become empty. The high-priced shops, banks and offices disappeared. It became a street of empty flats and gambling rooms. The elegant street changed into a street of young “future artists”, who must dig deep into their pockets. Open studios and flats of architects, artists, photographers...

LITOMĚŘICE – „GARDEN CITY“ VS. „URBAN SPRAWL“
About the city and its growing, about the magic and the problems of architecture in Litoměřice. With architects of the platform Litoměřice-Leitmeritz.net and with the invited specialists. Every historical era made the city grow into the surrounding landscape. Medieval Litoměřice were bounded by the ramparts. In the 19the century, the boundary had shifted somewhere between the two railways, but it is difficult to find it today. The villa quarter under Mostná hora has signs of good-quality urbanism – as opposed to the satellite on Miřejovická street.

NYMBURK- IMPRISONED IN THE RAILWAY
Starting on a road flyover, over the railway station to the former workers’ quarter (recollecting its original look and describing its present challenges). Discussion about the fundamental influence that railways have on the development of Nymburk and its urbanism, about the present condition of the station and the space in front of it. We will go by train and will get out on the station Nymburk-město (Nymburk City). And finally the crematorium and the ceremony hall. OLOMOUC – HOUSES FOR MACHINES
Art historian Lukáš Beran gives a lecture on the rise of modern industrial architecture in the 19th and the 20th centuries. He will talk about industry architects and their works and will present examples of industrial architecture home and abroad, including buildings in the Olomouc region. About English textile factories, American car factories and Czech breweries. About industrial chateaus, feronconcrete classicism and an aquarium full of girls. The lecturer works in the Research Centre for Industrial Heritage FA CTU Prague and his lecture will open the Architecture Day in Olomouc, which has industrial architecture as its theme this year.

OŠELÍN – MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN CONTEXT OF THE PLACE
Stroll through the village with architects Dušan Řezáč and Hans Ulrich Herzig. An area full of history. It is located between the towns Stříbro (Mies) and Tachov (Tachau) close to the important trade route between Prague and Nuremberg. The topography has predetermined the spatial arrangement of this small village. We will see the church, the parsonage, the Baroque chateau and the newly built apartment house inside a farmstead.

OTROKOVICE – „BAŤOV HAS EVERYTHING WHAT ZLÍN IS MISSING “
A cycling tour through an industrial city which was to compensate for all the defects of the Baťa city Zlín. Art historian Klára Eliášová leads the tour and shows us how the face of the city changes under layers of thermal insulation. Residential quarters, lodging houses, factories, schools and the first prefab constructions. A pause to brace one’s energies before the Karfík Trade House and Club.

PARDUBICE – OFFCITY TRIP: MADE IN FINLAND
Without reindeer and the aurora borealis, but with a final surprise!
Ohrazenice is a small village between Pardubice and the chemical industry areas in Semtín and Rybitví. In the 1950s, there arose a small colony of Finnish Log Homes here. The wooden duplex houses were really brought here from Finland, which was the only country that was able to provide homes for 200 families of workers from the factories nearby. Their lifetime was originally estimated to be 30 years, but most of the houses still exist and provide high-quality living. But thermal insulation and other insensitive transformations change the character of this urbanistically interesting place. Architect Ondřej Teplý and architecture historian František R. Václavík.

Architecture students from Liberec and architect Viktor Vlach present possibilities for important city spaces that they have worked with in the preceding workshop. They come to Police nad Metují now, a city of 4000 inhabitants that lies hemmed in by mesas and sandstone rocks. The students present their plans on the real places.

Rich social life and frequent travels of Czechoslovak architects abroad made Prague to be a centre of modern architecture. PRAHA ČERNÝ MOST – BETWEEN A HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AND A CITY
Can a housing estate become a special kind of an ideal and compact city? A stroll through Černý most and the legendary Bryskova street and following the original visions of the housing area Černý most II – výstavba číslo 4 (Development No.4) by Vladimír Štulc. About the industry history of the river Vltava, about the landscape changes and about the role of the river in regulative and urbanistic development of Prague. Guided by historian Kryštof Drnek. The riverbanks played manifold roles in past centuries. But the most extensive function was the one of industrial basis. Last two centuries made the representative function important. Composition of building structures on the riverbank corresponds with it.

PRAHA – HOUSING ESTATE INVALIDOVNA
A walk with art historian Martina Flekačová offers perspectives on the experimental housing estate, its urbanism and on a few remarkable buildings in its surroundings. These are the signs of the Invalidovna estate: new construction systems enabling diverse solutions of the “paneláks” and their inner dispositions, exemplary furnishings, community amenities and good-quality sculptures in the interiors.

PRAHA-MALEŠICE – INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS
A bike tour to places you would never go to. Spalovna (Incinerator) is the Prague Castle of Malešice. Its surroundings are full of charm. We will start at the former mortuary, continue with two buildings by studios D3A and Stanislav Fiala (which will be presented by the author himself), then with the extemporary colony and the self-seeding virgin forest and finally to Ho Chi Minh and the incinerator. The guides will be journalist Karolína Vránková and architect David Mateásko.

PRAHA – IN DIPLOMATIC SERVICE
Bike tour with architect Petr Klíma that focuses of modern architecture for diplomacy in Prague and on the relationship between architecture and politics on the East side of the Iron Curtain. Three buildings from last third of the 20th century make the axis of the route: the Bulgarian Mercantile Agency at Juliska, the consulate and the residential buildings of the former Soviet Union in Bubeneč and the diplomatic quarter in Troja.

A stroll through the garden that teaches children to speak correctly. Guided by Lenka Klodová, author of the playing elements and a member of the creative group Strašné dítě/Enfant terrible. Come and play. Or come and just walk through the first garden for speech therapy in the Czech Republic. The garden was set up in cooperation with landscape architects and artists from the residential college of the Christian School Don Bosco with logopaedics classes in Prague-Bohnice.

ROUDNICE NAD LABEM – CONTEMPORARY FAMILY HOUSES
Petr Janoš is the chief architect of the town and he will show us remarkable family houses of today. Some of the new houses in Roudnice nad Labem surpass the average. Several of them will be presented by their owners.

SEMILY – BIKE TOUR
Chief architect of Semily Martin Hilpert leads the bike tour and shows us singular objects in the town. We will see remarkable buildings on the town periphery and the view from the above hills. We will see the Vista, the square Komenského náměstí, the crematorium, the building of Policie ČR, Villa Bayer, villa at the AXL company building, KC Golf, Podmoklické náměstí, the Art Nouveau villa at the railway station, Letná housing estates, Acra a Matějovský hall, the housing estate Řeky, the factory Schmittova továrna, the archive, the footbridge and the museum.

STRAKONICE – „AFTERNOON SHIFT IN THE SPINNING MILL“
An afternoon in the unique functionalist building of a cotton mill at the river Volyňka. It is coming alive after one year. There will be a guided tour of the building with architects Dušan Řezáč and Jan Freiberg, a lecture about the conversion of industrial buildings, an exhibition of photographs and projects from an architectural workshop and even a concert, perhaps.

ÚSTÍ NAD LABEM – DEMOLISHED AND NOT BUILT AGAIN
Ústí nad Labem has experienced many dramatic changes in the last 100 years. It was an imposing industrial city, then a city damaged by bombing, then a city demolished by the ambitious goals of socialist planners and finally a city of free building at the turn of the centuries. This will be a journey to see places and buildings, which have been pulled down and disappeared. We will compare it with the plans, with the dreams, with the concepts and with the visions of architects and architecture students. Organized by the platform Ústí:Aussig.net. All will finish with a picnic at the new gallery Buňka (about 6 pm).

VALAŠSKÉ MEZIŘÍČÍ – A DIFFERENT (A MODERN) TRADITION II
Following the footsteps of modernism with architect Zdeněk Trefil and historian Ivana Martišková. We will see architecture influenced by Kotěra and 1920-1970s functionalism with buildings by Josef Místecký, Jaroslav Stockar von Bernkopf, Zdeněk Plesník, Alois Balán and Vladimír Kalivoda Snr. We will look at them in context of contemporary works by Zdeněk Trefil.

VYŠKOV – BUILDING THE RAILWAY STATION FORECOURT
Chief architect of Vyškov Zdeněk Pospíšil leads the way through the surroundings of the railway station. He will present the 1921-1925 development, the majority of which was financed by the savings bank of the town and which is defined by the streets Nádražní, II. odboje, Svatopluka Čecha, Kašíkova, Jiráskova, Heydukova, Nerudova. A part of the place had been built earlier and it had created the connection line between central part of the town and the railway station.

Architects Jitka Ressová and Michal Babic present the area of Baťa’s factory. The complex of the factory is going through a substantial transformation now. We can observe different concepts in the reconstruction of industrial buildings there. Impressive and less impressive examples, the area from a bird’s eye view, the metamorphoses of public spaces...

TRENČIANSKÉ TEPLICE – FROM HARMINEC TO FUCHS AND ONWARD
A tour through the modernism of Trenčianské Teplice. The spa has the most abundant density of first-quality inter-war architecture and we will observe it with architects Petr Szalay, Andrea Kalinová and Martin Zaiček. The Spa House Machnáč by Jaromír Krejcar, the swimming pool by Bohuslav Fuchs, the bath house by Artúr Szalatnay, Dom speváckeho zboru (House of the Choir) by Milan Michal Harminec and other works of the last century, which make the wonderful atmosphere of Trenčianské Teplice.

Public space in Piešťany, its metamorphoses, potentials, achievements and disappointments. We will ask what public space should be for, for whom it is built for and by whom it is to be used. Recent reconstructions have changed the image of the pedestrian precinct, the city centre and the riverbank. Other places still wait for their rebirths, e.g. the public buildings and the park. What is the condition of our streets and our crossroads? It is a bike tour and it will be guided by local authors.
