How biodiverse is Brno’s natural environment? And to what extent is its biodiversity affected by the changing city? Floodplain landscapes are generally home to a rich diversity of organisms. Similarly, the so-called urban wilderness benefits a wide range of fauna and flora as well as the city’s human inhabitants, providing not only distinctive spaces but also numerous ecosystem services. The loss of such places therefore ultimately affects us all.
The excursion will follow the Svitava River to Brno’s last floodplain forest, then continue across the Černovice Terrace, through old and new industrial zones, and finally to the Slatinka colony. Along the way, we will see how human activity has transformed the former floodplain landscape, learn about its non-human inhabitants, and discuss these changes. We will also explore the history of coexistence between people and nature and the possibilities of suburban life – living on the edge of the city.
