Art historian Anna Korbášová explores the housing situation during the First Czechoslovak Republic and how it was reflected in the historic city centre.
How did central Brno change after the establishment of Czechoslovakia? New social and economic conditions in the 1920s and 1930s gave rise to a number of remarkable buildings that continue to shape its appearance today. One of the major issues of the interwar period was the housing crisis, to which the state and municipalities responded with new legislation, support for housing construction, and a search for more affordable forms of housing.
Korbášová will present selected buildings in central Brno and focus on how contemporary legislation, state support, and municipal housing policy influenced both interwar architecture and residents’ living conditions.
