The story of the most modern house in the Austro-Hungarian Empire with architecture historian Dagmar Černoušková.
Reissig Villa on Hlinky Street was built in 1902 and was already described by the contemporary press as the most modern house in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Architect Leopold Bauer, who designed the villa for prominent Brno lawyer Karel Reissig, was also the architect of the famous Breda & Weinstein department store in Opava. The villa stood out at the time for its advanced technical equipment and luxurious interiors, which, like the garden, were also designed by Bauer. The garden originally included extensive sports facilities that unfortunately no longer survive – a tennis court used as an ice rink in winter, a small swimming pool, a sunbathing area, a bowling alley, and a small garden house. The concept of the entire design demonstrates an emphasis on combining care for physical and mental well-being.
