Architect Blanka Solár explores what the places we have set aside for death say about us and how funeral culture is changing.
Where have we put death away? And what should our final address look like? Together, we will explore the changing nature of funeral rituals and cemeteries themselves, from rural cemeteries surrounded by trees to today’s stone “enclosures” and the removal of death from everyday life. Yet the journey is also moving in the opposite direction: the gradual return to the landscape is giving rise to new forms of burial.
The social, economic, and cultural forces shaping cemeteries will be explored through findings from the Cemeteries Friendly to Nature and People educational programme for towns and municipalities, an analysis of the New Cemetery Bratislava 2050 study, and insights from other public discussions and conferences on the subject.
