From an emergency housing colony to a sought-after neighbourhood with Martina Babinčáková and Pavel Košťál, curators of the exhibition From Skala to Kamenka.
The first modest workers’ houses began to appear on the rock above the Svratka River in the 1920s as a consequence of the housing crisis. We are facing a housing crisis again today, and Kamenka is no exception. The possibility of building your own home on municipal land within a few months now seems unimaginable. The days when affordable housing could be found in this former emergency colony are also long gone. Moreover, many of its current residents have no prospect of ever owning the land on which their houses stand.
Brno’s legendary Kamenka, one of the city’s best-preserved workers’ colonies, has a rich history, unusual traditions, distinctive architecture, and a unique spirit. But it also carries the legacy of housing precarity in its various forms. Together, we will walk through its narrow streets, following an outdoor panel exhibition installed on houses, fences, and poles in both the upper and lower “Skala”.
