Architect Lenka Štěpánková presents housing designed by leading Czech architects that was unique and progressive for its time.
Several model houses were presented directly within the Brno exhibition grounds during the 1928 Exhibition of Contemporary Culture. With the exception of the model electrified farm, demolished in 1958 to make way for Pavilion C, these exhibition houses have survived to the present day. They include the Czechoslovak Werkbund apartment building, designed by architect Jaroslav Havlíček as a block of a modular housing estate, and an economical family house by architect Oldřich Starý, designed on a minimal footprint. Pavel Janák also conceived his Pavilion of the School of Applied Arts as a model house for a gallery owner, with commercial premises and an exhibition hall on the ground floor and family living spaces on two recessed upper floors.
Although their original interiors have not survived, these model houses, together with the Nový dům colony built at the same time, demonstrate the attention contemporary society devoted to modern, progressive housing and construction.
